Productivity 101 - At Home + The Office

I am a HUGE to-do lister. Lists on lists.

It's easy to become overwhelmed when those lists are getting longer and longer. Whether you're working at the office or at home, I find that I'm the most productive when I've set up my environment correctly and handle my tasks smartly.

Because I know that I'm not the only crazy person who deals with these issues, I've outlined some of my best tips for productivity no matter where you are.

  • DEDICATE SOME TIME FOR PLANNING
    • Take 5-10 minutes in the morning or night before to think through your tasks, and make a (realistic) list of what you need to accomplish for the day. Knowing what you need to cross off that list will help keep you focused - I always feel satisfied when I get to cross something off that's completed. *TIP: Prioritize your to-do list to be even more organized. I will usually number things in the order I need to finish them dependent on the day's schedule!
  • DRINK LOTS OF WATER
    • It wasn't until I started working in an all-day office environment that I found how dehydrated I can become by closing time. Staying well-hydrated helps you to stay focused and on-point!
  • LISTEN TO MUSIC
    • I don't know about you, but I do absolutely everything better with music. If you're sensitive to noises and are easily distracted, go into the bubble (as I like to call it). Noise-cancelling headphones are also a great option if music is too much of a distraction for you.

  • HAVE A HEALTHY MEAL/SNACKS ON HAND
    • A burger and fries isn't going to cut it. You need healthy food to power you through the day, especially when that 3:00pm snack time hits and you catch yourself reaching for a candy bar. My favorite snacks to have on hand are trail mixes, dried fruits or fresh fruits, energy bites/bars and homemade granola.
  • TAKE A BREAK
    • Yes, we all get into those modes where we refuse to stop working. But, every once and a while, you should take a short break. Give your eyes a rest from the computer screen, go for a quick walk, do a short yoga session to stretch out tight muscles or do some chores you've been needing to do.
  • ORGANIZE YOUR WORKSPACE
    • There is literally nothing worse than trying to get work done and not being able to find anything on/around your desk. I would have a mini freak out. Invest in office supply holders, organizers and more to make your desk and workspace more user-friendly. You'd be surprised how dedicating this space for you and your work will actually help productivity.

  • MINIMIZE DISTRACTIONS
    • As hard as it may be, put your phone on mute and resist the urge to check social media accounts every other minute. I'll admit that this is the toughest tip for me to follow - as almost 95 percent of my job revolves around an online presence and social media.
  • KNOW WHEN TO CALL IT A DAY
    • You're not Superwoman, it's okay. Sometimes you just can't complete everything, so I take advantage of this to be focused for the next day to complete those unfinished tasks first and tackle the day. Don't make it a habit of working until midnight each day (I am SO guilty of this). Unless you're really on a roll, call it quits and get yourself some shut-eye.
I hope you find these tips helpful for tackling your work week! Take advantage of this weekend to prepare for Monday and kill it!

  5. I needed this post! I have so much I want to get accomplish but lately I've been feeling overwhelmed and just decide to Netflix instead. I think being organized is key. I used to reward myself with mini breaks after accomplishing tasks on my to-do list. Might have to start that again!

  7. Great tips, thank you!! This was a good reminder for me to take a few small breaks and continue to drink lots of water. When I work from home, I always notice that I don't drink as much water as I do in the office.

  9. You know what's funny? I'm a huge list maker too, and sometimes I'll put easy things on my list so I can cross it off because crossing things off FEELS so good. And it has to be a handwritten list to cross off from because it's just not as satisfying on a cellphone! Love this post & I thank you for your tips! xx, adaatude.com
